Everyone knows why Southern California and the Greater San Diego areas are so popular, it’s the sunny beaches! The Residence Inn by Marriott® San Diego Central Kearny Mesa is located inland near several major freeways that can whisk you to the beaches in no time. Within a ten-mile drive in several directions are dozens of beaches that offer everything from surfing, sun bathing, wildlife, and fun frolicking ocean fun. Some of our favorite beaches are listed below.
Official San Diego City Beaches
- Blacks Beach - two mile long, sandy strip situated at the base of majestic cliffs up to 300 feet high. Access is difficult and beach is somewhat isolated. Great beach for couples but probably not for families.
- La Jolla Shores - sandy beach approximately one mile long, adjacent to a residential area. In summer, waves at this beach are usually the most gentle of all San Diego beaches. Kellogg Park, a grassy area, is located behind the main lifeguard station and is ideal for picnicking. A wide cement boardwalk parallels a portion of the beach between the park and the sand. Great family beach.
- La Jolla Cove (pictured at the top) - very small beach, tucked between adjacent sandstone cliffs. Due to its extraordinary beauty, La Jolla Cove is one of the most photographed beaches in Southern California.
- Children’s Pool - The Children's Pool (850 Coast Boulevard), also known as the Casa, is a small beach partially protected by a seawall. The original intention was to create a fully protected swimming area, but sand has filled in much of the area inside the wall. This is a very picturesque beach with a panoramic view.
- Windansea Beach - best known for its beautiful scenery and surf breaks created by underwater reefs. Sandstone rocks act as partitions along the beach offering a secluded atmosphere for sunbathing. Much of the beach at Windansea experiences shorebreak, a condition on steep beaches which results in hard breaking surf right at the shoreline.
- North Pacific Beach - extends approximately one mile from the north end of the community of Pacific Beach to the south end of the community of La Jolla. This beach is bordered by cliffs up to 75 feet in height. A sidewalk traverses the cliff-top along much of the south end of the beach. At the north end of the beach is a separate surfing area.
- Pacific and Mission Beach - This beach continues south for over two miles, becoming Mission Beach and then South Mission Beach. This long beach, known as The Strand, lies directly adjacent to the residential and commercial areas of the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach communities. It is the most popular beach in the City of San Diego and draws large crowds in summer.
- Ocean Beach - located in the community of Ocean Beach, just south of the Mission Bay channel entrance. This is a wide beach approximately one mile long. A volleyball area can be found near the north end of the beach.
Other Area Beaches
- Coronado Beaches - Coronado has great wide and sandy beaches to spend an entire day or weekend sprawled out under the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. Swim, surf, sail, body board, fish, or just fall asleep in the sun. Other activities include beach volleyball, tide pool exploration, and kite flying. Beaches include Central Beach, Silver Strand State Beach, and Bayside Beach and Tidelands Park.
- Del Mar State Beach - Corona del Mar State Beach is a popular place for swimmers. The half-mile long sandy beach framed by cliffs and a rock jetty that forms the east entrance to Newport Harbor. The beach is also popular with surfers and divers.
- Solana Beach – charming seaside community just north of San Diego that offers family-friendly sandy beaches and nearby shopping.
- Imperial Beach – located about 20 miles south of downtown San Diego, Imperial Beach is the most southwesterly community in the U.S. This beautiful, sandy beach is a great place to visit for some much-needed relaxation away from the crowds.
